Welcome to A Soft Place To Be

There is a place, just beyond the noise, where the breath deepens, the walls come down, and something inside us has room to be heard again.

When I first created this space for writing, I called it A Soft Place to Be. It was the original name of what has since become my Field Notes, and although the name has changed, the intention beneath it has not.

I wanted this to be a resting place for the heart. A place for those who feel deeply, question deeply, and sometimes carry things they cannot quite name. A place where there is no need to shrink, explain, perform, or have everything figured out before entering.

That is still what I hope you find here.

These Field Notes are pieces gathered from the living edge of my own experience: reflections, stories, moments of recognition, encounters with the natural world, creative discoveries, and the threads that reveal themselves when I slow down long enough to notice.

Sometimes I will bring you into the forest with me. Sometimes something ordinary will open into a much larger question. Sometimes we will wander through memory, creativity, relationship, grief, wonder, or the strange and beautiful experience of being human.

I don't always know where a Field Note is going when I begin writing it.

I rather like it that way.

There is room here for curiosity. There is room for uncertainty. There is room for the things we know without quite knowing how we know them, and for the questions that become more interesting when we stop demanding immediate answers.

There is room simply to notice.

Every post is a hand extended.

An invitation to sit beside me for a little while and look at something together.

You don't have to agree with everything I see. You don't have to experience the world the way I do. Perhaps something I notice will illuminate something entirely different in you. Perhaps a story will remind you of one of your own. Perhaps a question will follow you into the rest of your day.

That, too, is relationship.

And relationship has become one of the deepest threads running through everything I create here at The Elemental Lantern.

So although A Soft Place to Be has become Field Notes, I don't think the soft place disappeared.

I think it simply grew.

It became a place to wander, to notice, to recognize, to relate, and sometimes to reorient. A place where we can come close to an experience without immediately needing to define it.

A place where wonder is still allowed.

If you've found your way here, welcome.

Stay as long as you like. Wander wherever your curiosity takes you.

I'll keep the light on.

Soulfully present,
