Field Note No. 1: Discovering the Work I Have Been Doing All Along
Field Note No. 1
Nothing Exists Alone: Discovering the Work I Have Been Doing All Along
Recorded by DeAn'Na, Keeper of the Lantern

Welcome, Traveler.
Come on in.
I've had the lantern lit since early this morning, and there's a place beside me if you'd like to sit for a while.
My journal has been open for hours.
I've written a sentence... crossed it out... written another... then found myself staring out the window instead.
Sometimes the words need a little more time than we do.
This feels like one of those mornings.
Yesterday, something happened that I haven't been able to stop thinking about.
Actually... I don't think that's quite true.
It wasn't something that happened.
It was something that finally introduced itself.
You know those moments when a single sentence gathers years of your life into one place?
That's what this felt like.
I've spent so many years trying to explain what I do.
If you've been here for a while, you've probably watched it evolve right alongside me.
There were sessions.
Then companions.
Then journals.
Then maps.
Then mirrors.
Then threads.
Then the compass rose quietly found its way into almost everything I created.
One by one, they arrived.
I loved each one.
But if I'm honest... I couldn't tell you why they all belonged together.
I just knew they did.
I trusted them before I understood them.
...
Yesterday, while following one of those conversations that seems to know where it's going before I do, I heard myself say these words:
Nothing exists alone. Everything is revealed through relationship.
I stopped.
Not because I thought it sounded beautiful.
Because it sounded familiar.
It felt like hearing my own voice echo back to me from somewhere deep inside the landscape.
I just sat there for a while.
Then I started looking backward instead of forward.
And that's when I noticed something that made me smile.
I don't think I've ever looked at anything by itself.
Not once.
When I look at a tree, I don't just see a tree.
I notice the way the wind is moving through its branches.
The roots reaching into the earth.
The birds resting for a moment before flying on.
The changing light.
The quiet conversations happening beneath the soil that most of us never think about.
When I meet someone, I don't only see the person sitting in front of me.
I wonder about the paths they've walked.
The things they've carried.
The moments that shaped them.
The dreams they've tucked away.
The stories still waiting for someone to listen without trying to fix them.
I suppose I've always been listening for relationship.
I just never called it that.
...
As I kept writing yesterday, another realization quietly found me.
The lantern isn't just a lantern.
The compass isn't simply a beautiful symbol.
The maps aren't there because I happen to love old paper.
The mirror isn't about reflection alone.
The companions aren't just handmade figures.
The threads aren't simply interesting images.
They've all been speaking the same language.
I simply hadn't become fluent enough to hear it yet.
And then I laughed.
A real laugh.
Because I realized I'd been trying to explain my work by pointing to individual pieces.
It was like trying to explain a forest by handing someone a single leaf.
Of course, it never felt complete.
The work was never the leaf.
It was always the forest.
...
I think that's why I've started calling people Traveler.
Not because it sounds poetic.
Not because it fits a brand.
Because when I imagine the person reading these words, I don't imagine a crowd.
I imagine one person.
Someone who has been walking for a while.
Someone carrying beautiful things.
Someone carrying difficult things.
Someone who has unfolded and refolded the same map more times than they can count.
Someone wondering if the compass still works.
Someone hoping there might be a lantern somewhere up ahead.
If that's you...
I'm really glad you found your way here.
...
There's something else I've been smiling about.
For a long time, I thought I was building a business.
Then I thought I was building a website.
Now I realize I've been building a world.
Not a world to escape into.
A world to return to.
A place where maps matter because journeys matter.
Where mirrors are invitations instead of judgments.
Where field notes are simply the things we notice while paying attention.
Where companions remind us that wonder still belongs.
Where orientation matters more than certainty.
Where relationship is the thread quietly holding everything together.
I think I've been living here for a long time.
Yesterday...
I finally found the front door.
...
So this morning, I'm beginning something new.
These Field Notes won't be lessons.
They won't be polished essays.
They won't pretend that I've reached the end of the path.
They'll simply be the pages I gather while walking it.
Some days we'll discover something together.
Some days we'll ask better questions than answers.
Some days we'll pause because the light changed, or because a symbol appeared where we didn't expect it.
And sometimes...
We'll simply sit beside the lantern for a while and enjoy the quiet.
Thank you for sharing this first page with me.
It means more than you probably know.
Until our paths cross again...
Keep tending your own light.
You never know who might find their way because you did.
With gratitude,
DeAn'Na

The journey begins with a single observation. Welcome to the first entry in the Field Notes from The Elemental Lantern, where moments of presence become maps for the road ahead.
